Your Local Car – A brief history

When Janet and Alan White found that they couldn’t book a local taxi to Frimley Park Hospital at short notice, they decided to create a taxi company that could! Nomad Cars took its first paying customer in September 1996, and the firm quickly gained a reputation for reliable, friendly private hire company. Rebranded as Mytchett Cars in August 2000, the company now provided local people with options for larger, 8-seater private hire vehicles.

Janet and Alan decided it was time to retire from Mytchett Cars in March 2011, and they passed the company on to their son Peter White. Peter understood the commitment required to look after both current and future customers, but after driving himself, he was shocked at the amount of potential customers that were being turned away. So he set out to grow the business such that it had enough drivers, cars and capacity for anyone who needed a local private hire taxi.

Your local car taxi

In April 2012, Peter re-branded the company as Your Local Car, to show it was a personal service “just for you” or your company. Setting ambitious gaols for growth, he quickly built up a company vehicle pool that included Zafira Tourers, executive vans / minibuses and VIP executive cars.

Peter also invested in a state of the art dispatch and online bookings system, enabling drivers to respond faster, and passengers to book online. Peter also revolutionised taxi booking in the area with the YLC mobile phone app, the only taxi firm with this tech in the area when it first launched. As a result, booking a YLC journey is quick and easy, which is probably why the app is so popular! (For more details see our Get the App page.)

All that investment, innovation and drive has taken Your Local Car from a small family firm to a leading taxi company clocking up its 1 millionth passenger journey in September 2025.
